The mechanism
How it works.
In the body, the brain's pituitary gland releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which travels to the ovaries to grow and ripen egg-containing follicles, or to the testes to support sperm production. Follitropin is lab-made FSH (grown in cells, then purified). Injected under the skin, it does the same job as natural FSH but at controlled, often higher levels: in women it drives one or several follicles to mature for ovulation or egg collection in IVF; in some men with too little of their own FSH, it helps restart sperm production. Because it pushes the ovaries harder than usual, the response has to be watched closely to avoid over-stimulation.

The main risks are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (swollen ovaries and dangerous fluid shifts in severe cases), multiple pregnancies, blood clots, and ovarian torsion, so treatment is closely monitored with ultrasound and blood tests.
