Ipamorelin

Also: NNC 26-0161 · selective GH secretagogue

Ipamorelin is a selective growth-hormone-releasing peptide that raises growth hormone through the ghrelin receptor without strongly affecting other hormones. It was studied as a drug, including for slowed gut function after surgery, but that development was not completed, and it is now widely sold in the gray market for muscle and recovery. It is not approved. The Watchlist boundary is separating its limited human research from broad muscle, recovery, and anti-aging claims.

The verdict

Our read at a glance.

Whether ipamorelin's ability to raise growth hormone and its limited drug research support the muscle, recovery, and anti-aging claims made for it in the gray market.

The signal
Human studies show ipamorelin raises growth hormone, and it was tested as a drug for conditions such as slowed gut function after surgery, but that development was discontinued. There is little evidence for the muscle, recovery, and anti-aging benefits commonly claimed, and it is not approved for any use.
The unknown
Whether raising growth hormone with ipamorelin produces meaningful benefits beyond biomarker changes, and how its abandoned drug research relates to current gray-market products.
Our read
A selective GH-releasing peptide with thin human evidence, not a proven therapy. Ipamorelin reliably raises growth hormone, but its drug development was dropped and there is little proof of the muscle or anti-aging benefits people buy it for.

The mechanism

How it works.

Ipamorelin is a synthetic five-amino-acid peptide that acts as a selective agonist at the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) on pituitary cells. Binding there triggers a short, pulse-like burst of growth hormone release, much like the body's own ghrelin does, but unlike older growth-hormone-releasing peptides it does so without meaningfully raising appetite, cortisol, or prolactin. This selectivity is well documented in human and animal studies, but a clean rise in growth hormone is a biomarker change, not proof of the muscle or recovery benefits sold in the gray market.

Safety & regulatory boundary

The consequential part.

Ipamorelin is not an approved drug, and its development as a medicine was not completed. It is widely sold as a research chemical, where product identity and quality are uncertain. Raising growth hormone is not free of risk, and the limited research does not validate muscle, recovery, or anti-aging claims. Gray-market products are not the same as any studied preparation.

What's next

What we're watching.

Any renewed controlled trials, regulatory actions on gray-market GH-releasing peptides, and long-term safety data.

Context

Why this is discussed.

Ipamorelin is one of the most popular GH-releasing peptides in the performance and anti-aging communities because it is described as selective and well tolerated, and it is often stacked with other GH-axis compounds.
