The mechanism
How it works.
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic peptide modeled on alpha-MSH, the body's pigment-signaling hormone, but built to resist breakdown and hit several melanocortin receptors at once. Activating MC1R on skin melanocytes drives melanin production and tanning, while activating MC4R in the brain affects appetite and triggers sexual arousal, so a single compound touches tanning, body weight, and libido. The human data are small and old, most of the receptor biology comes from animal and cell studies, and regulators have warned about unapproved melanotan products sold online.
